La Pavoni Espresso Machines

Most La Pavoni buyers should get the Professional lever. Buy the Europiccola for straight shots only, and the Esperto Abile if you want a group gauge.

Most people who want a La Pavoni should buy the Professional. It is a direct lever with a 1.6 L boiler and a gauge, and it handles milk drinks and coffee for two. Buy the smaller Europiccola if you drink one or two straight espressos at a time. Buy the Esperto Abile only if you will use a gauge on the group. Everything else in the line-up is a finish choice or a pump machine.

This guide uses manufacturer specifications, manuals and long-term owner reports, plus US retailer prices checked in October 2026. We do not claim hands-on use.

What makes La Pavoni different

La Pavoni is a Milan company best known for home lever machines. Its levers have no pump. You raise a lever to fill the group with hot water from the boiler, then press it down to force that water through the coffee. Your arm sets the pressure and the flow.

That design has three effects you should accept before you buy:

  • A learning curve. Grind, dose and lever speed all show up in the cup, and the machine gives little feedback. Owners commonly report a few weeks before shots repeat.
  • Group heat. The group sits on the boiler and gets hotter with each shot. La Pavoni’s manual says to wait a few minutes after 3 to 4 consecutive coffees.
  • Simple repairs. With no pump or valves to fail, most service is a gasket kit and basic tools.

Our guide to boilers and pressure explains how a direct lever differs from pump machines.

The lever line-up

The Europiccola and Professional use the Millennium group with a basket of about 51 mm, 110 V power at 1,000 W, and a 1-year US importer warranty.

Model US codes Boiler Gauge Who it is for
Europiccola EPBB-8, EPC-8, EPW-8 0.8 L, rated 8 cups None (EPC-8SB has one) One or two straight shots at a time
Professional PC-16, PBB-16, PCW-16, PB-16, PG-16 1.6 L, rated 16 cups Boiler Milk drinks, two people
Stradivari 8-cup and 16-cup (PSC-16, PSW-16) Europiccola or Professional size 16-cup only Buyers who prefer the curved base
Esperto Abile ESPAB-16 Professional size, rated 16 cups Group and boiler, plus group temperature strip Owners who want to read brew pressure
Esperto Competente / Edotto ESPCO-16 / ESPED-16 Professional size Group and boiler The Abile in brass or copper

The price ladder is short. The Europiccola usually sells for about $850 to $1,100, depending on finish. The chrome Professional (PC-16) sells for about $1,200 to $1,350, and other finishes cost more. US retailers list the Stradivari PSW-16 at about $1,400 to $1,570 and the Esperto Abile at about $1,800 to $2,300.

Which lever to buy

Buy the Professional if anyone in your home drinks milk, or you make two drinks in a session. Twice the water means fewer refills, and each refill needs a full cool-down and pressure release. Read our La Pavoni Professional review.

Buy the Europiccola if you drink straight espresso, one or two at a time, and want the smallest machine. It makes the same shot as the Professional. Read our Europiccola review, or see the two side by side in our Europiccola vs Professional comparison.

Buy the Esperto Abile if you want feedback while you learn. The gauge on the group shows the pressure at the puck as you pull, and the strip shows group heat. The US importer ships it with competition baskets, a bottomless portafilter and a stainless tamper. If you would not look at the gauge, a Professional brews the same way for less. Check the Esperto Abile price.

Buy the Stradivari only for the look. It brews like the Europiccola or Professional it is built on. The 16-cup version has the gauge. Check the Stradivari 16-cup price.

La Pavoni pump machines

La Pavoni also sells pump machines in the US. They work like any other pump espresso machine and do not need lever technique.

Model Type Key facts
Mini Cellini Single boiler, E61 group Vibration pump, commercial-size portafilter
Domus Bar Single boiler with built-in grinder Burr grinder on top, steam wand
Botticelli Specialty Dual boiler, E61 group Separate brew and steam boilers with PID, rotary pump, three gauges

The Botticelli is sold through US espresso retailers. If you want a pump machine, compare it with other brands first. The La Pavoni name matters most on the levers.

Who should not buy a La Pavoni lever

Skip the levers if:

  • You want the same shot every morning without practice.
  • You do not own an espresso grinder and will not buy one. Pre-ground coffee runs far too fast.
  • You make many drinks in a row, or drinks for guests.
  • You want to brew and steam at the same time.

A pump machine with a single boiler, or a dual boiler for milk-heavy homes, suits those buyers better. Our manual espresso machine guide covers who a lever suits.

Parts support and repairs

La Pavoni levers are among the easiest espresso machines to keep running. The wear parts are the piston seals, group gasket, boiler cap gasket and sight glass seals. Kits for the Europiccola and Professional are widely sold, and a careful owner can replace them with a few wrenches, circlip pliers and food-safe silicone grease. This step-by-step gasket replacement guide shows each stage.

Generation matters when you buy parts. La Pavoni changed the group around 2000:

  • Millennium (about 2000 on): a plastic sleeve inside the group, a basket of about 51 mm, and a gasket kit with a sleeve seal.
  • Pre-Millennium: no sleeve, a basket of about 49 mm, and a smaller group gasket.

Baskets, tampers and group gaskets do not cross between the two. Very early machines have their own kits too. If you buy used, look up into the group with a flashlight before you order parts.

What to budget beyond the machine

  • A grinder. It matters more than which lever you pick. See our espresso grinder guide.
  • A 51 mm tamper and a scale. The included tamper works, but a fitted one gives a more even puck.
  • Descaler. Follow the descaling interval in your US manual. Hard water needs more.
  • A gasket kit every few years, or when you see leaks or the lever feels loose.

There are no filter cartridges or cleaning tablets to buy. Never backflush a lever with a blind basket. For more model detail, see this guide to every La Pavoni machine.
